Inside pages are printed upside down...

Item # 702066 ·

THE DEMOCRATIC STANDARD, Eureka, Humboldt County, California, July 10, 1880

  • Rare old West publication
  • Unusual printing error

A quite scarce title from Northern California filled with various news and advertisements of the day, several of the ads being illustrated.
The content is nothing notable, but the layout certainly is. All of pages 2 and 3 are printed upside down. As such, quite collectable.
Never bound nor trimmed, wide margins, news agent's stamp in the masthead, very nice condition.

Background: This July 10, 1880, issue of The Democratic Standard from Eureka, California, is a remarkably scarce artifact of Old West print history that derives its primary value not from standard historical milestones, but from a dramatic production error where pages 2 and 3 were accidentally printed completely upside down due to a compositor inverting the type chase. Preserved in exceptionally fine condition as an unbound, untrimmed copy with wide margins and an authentic news agent’s stamp on the masthead, this layout anomaly transforms an already uncommon Northern California periodical into a highly collectible printer's error that offers a tangible, whimsical glimpse into the chaotic mechanics of a 19th-century frontier print shop.
