Extra edition on the last of the bare-knuckles fight...

Item # 702064
July 08, 1889
THE WORLD--EVENING EDITION "EXTRA", July 8, 1889  Other newspapers reported the result of the last bare knuckles boxing match in their July 9 edition. This being an "Extra"' of July 8, reports the frustration that the telegraph wires were cut so despite the fight presumed over, there was no information as of the late evening.
As a bit of background, this was the longest bare-knuckle prizefight in history, between John L. Sullivan and Jake Kilrain in an obscure location in south Mississippi. The fight took place on July 8 and lasted seventy-five sweaty, blood-soaked rounds. Because of the brutal nature of bare-knuckle boxing, it was illegal, and therefore the fight’s location was kept secret. Furthermore, in 1889 prizefighting was illegal in all of the country’s then 38 states.
So, this 'Extra" edition had planned to announce the winner, but could not because, as noted in one report: "The news from the great fight is delayed, and it is reported here that the sports have cut the wires running to the grounds and prevented the operator from sending out any dispatches. This action is said to be due to the feeling aroused by the belief that the telegraph company is in some measures to blame for discoveries concerning sites for the ring on the part of the authorities which have put the management of the fight to some trouble."
First column heads include: "EXTRA" "IN DOUBT" "Nobody Yet Knows the Result of the Great Fight" "The Sports Have Cut the Wires & All Dispatches are Delayed" "Don't Take Any Stock in the Wild Rumors" with more.
This is a very graphic front page with full-figure prints of both "Jake Kilrain" and "John L. Sullivan" and other related prints including a print of the boxing "arena".
Given this 4 page issue is paginated as pages 1, 2, 3 & 4, and being an "Extra" edition, we believe this to be the complete issue.
Four pages, a few minor stains, some archival mends inside, generally in good condition.
