Note: Samuel Deane's 1794 election sermon, delivered on May 28 before the Massachusetts General Court—including Lieutenant Governor Samuel Adams—offers a compelling reflection on the moral and civic responsibilities of both leaders and citizens in the early American republic. Deane, a Harvard-educated minister of the First Church in Portland (then part of Massachusetts), chose Proverbs 3:6 as his guiding text: "In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths."
