Surrender of Montreal... Minute-men stand ready... Gov. Dunmore & slave troops...

Item # 701111 ·

NEW-ENGLAND CHRONICLE OR THE ESSEX GAZETTE, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dec. 14, 1775  A very historic issue, as the first column of the front page has the: "Articles of Capitulation" for the capture of Montreal by General Richard Montgomery.
Also on the front page is a letter to a friend in Boston on the concern the people in Ireland have for those in America, followed by 4 more letters "...to an officer in Boston..." which are great reading, a few bits including: "...I was very happy to find you were not of the detachment to Bunker's Hill; never was such a slaughter?..." and: "Never was so much surprized as to hear of the stand the Americans have made against his Majesty's troops..." and also: "...had the Ministry certainly foreseen the unanimity & firmness of the Americans, they would hardly have ventured on the steps they have taken. How this unnatural combustion will end, the Lord only knows..." and more. Much great first-hand comments on the thoughts & fears of war.
The front page also has a letter to Capt. Garner, aid-de-camp to General Burgoyne, with war-related content.
Page 2 has an item from Newport beginning: "Ten thousand minute men stand ready to come in for the protection of this island in the shortest notice...".
Page 3 has much on the war including: "...just arrived from Montreal, assured them that just before he left it...brought the agreeable news of its having surrendered to Col. Arnold, that a party was detached to cut off Carleton's retreat...". Also: "Gov. Dunmore of Virginia has issued a proclamation declaring  his determination to execute martial law...& requiring every person capable to bear arms to resort to His Majesty's Standard or be looked upon as TRAITORS; and further calling upon indented servants, negroes, etc. to join his Majesty's troops...". See the web for the significance of this Governor Dunmore Proclamation.
An item notes: "Last Monday night came to town from Virginia the Lade of his Excellency General Washington, and the Lady of the Hon. Adj. General Gates...".
The back page begins with: "A SONG. Composed by a Soldier in the Continental Army". Other good war content as well.
Four pages, a bit of stray foxing, never-trimmed margins, very nice condition.
