With the very rare plate of Ben Franklin...

Item # 701093

THE MASSACHUSETTS MAGAZINE, Boston, May, 1790  The first four pages are taken up with: "Of Dr. Franklin" with the introduction beginning: "Some Account of the late illustrious BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, L.L.D...." with his various credentials. Then what follows is a lengthy biography of him, listing his many accomplishments, and ending with the text of his quite famous epitaph: "We cannot omit adding his Epitaph, written by himself many years since, which is too good to need a recommendation. 'The Body of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, Printer, like the cover of an old book, its contents torn out & stripped of its lettering and gilding, lies here, food for worms..." with more.
It is notable that Ben Franklin was born in Boston, the city of this publication. He died in Philadelphia on April 17, 1790.
Certainly the most significant item in this issue is the very rare, full page plate of Ben Franklin, captioned: "B. Franklin, L.L.D. F.R.S. Born at Boston in New England, Jan. 6, 1706. Died at Philadelphia April 17, 1790."
Typically any plates of note in 18th century American magazines were removed by collectors long ago. It is very rare to find this issue with the plate intact.
Also in this issue is: "On The Art of Swimming" which was written by Ben Franklin; "On Comets" which includes an illustration, & much more. Near the back is a poem: "Sacred to Heaven & Franklin!" followed by another: "On The Death of Dr. Franklin". Also an address signed: John Hancock, concerning his being elected governor, plus another letter signed: Samuel Adams.
A report notes: "...convention of Rhode Island met...continued the discussion of the constitution, amendments, etc...the question of ratification was put & passed in the affirmative...Thus the federal dome is rendered still more complete..." and also: "The President of the United States, in addition to his own example, has ordered that the uniforms of his household be made of cloth manufactured at Hartford in Connecticut."
Full title/contents page, measures 5 by 8 inches, 64 pages, minor foxing, nice condition.
