PORCUPINE'S GAZETTE, Philadelphia, March 15, 1798  This was William Cobbett's important and controversial--but short-lived--daily newspaper. Cobbett was a prolific & controversial publisher who often wrote under the pen-name of "Peter Porcupine." He was famous for sniping at his political opponents, usually those of a Jeffersonian-Republican sentiment.
Page 2 has an advertisement for a: "Grand Ball, in Ricketts' Circus..." with further detail. This was the first circus in America, starting in 1793. By 1798 he had a permanent building in Phila., in which this ball was held. Among the back page ads is one for the print of: "...A Striking Likeness of the Late President...George Washington...".
A feature of the masthead is the engraving of a porcupine.
