background: The Loma Prieta earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area in California on October 17, 1989, at 5:04 p.m. local time. It registered a magnitude of 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale and lasted about 15 seconds, causing widespread destruction across Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Oakland, and surrounding areas. The quake was centered in the Santa Cruz Mountains, along the San Andreas Fault, about 10 miles northeast of Santa Cruz. It caused 67 deaths and injured more than 3,700 people, while leaving tens of thousands homeless. One of the most dramatic and tragic scenes was the collapse of a section of the Bay Bridge and the failure of a double-decker freeway in Oakland, which trapped vehicles and led to multiple fatalities. The earthquake also caused fires, landslides, and widespread structural damage, with total economic losses estimated at $6–10 billion, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in California history at the time. The quake gained national attention because it occurred during the broadcast of the 1989 World Series, which was being held in San Francisco, giving millions of Americans live footage of the devastation.
