A newsletter printed on-board a British escort ship...

Item # 698059 ·
THE STALKER, May 8, 1942  There is very little information on this crudely produced newsletter. It looks very much like other "camp" newspapers produced on board ships during World War II for the benefit of the personnel on board. This is the volume 1, number 18 issue.
Research leans towards this being the newsletter for one of a large group of escort aircraft carriers transferred to the Royal Navy under Lend-Lease during World War II. The ship was launched in San Francisco on March 5, 1942, then acquired and transferred to the United Kingdom December 21, 1942. As an escort carrier it played a vital part in allied operations in the Atlantic. She participated in the Salerno landings in September, 1943, providing effective on-the-spot support for assault forces. Stalker also took part in the important landings in southern France in August 1944.
Complete as a single sheet issue, crudely produced on a typewriter & mimeograph machine, 8 1/2 by 12 3/4 inches, some light staining & magic wear, good condition.

Background: This unassuming, crudely mimeographed sheet is more than just a newsletter; it is a living heartbeat of the "Arsenal of Democracy" captured at a pivotal moment in 1942. Representing a rare surviving artifact from the HMS Stalker, a Lend-Lease escort carrier born in San Francisco and forged in the fires of the Royal Navy, this Vol. 1, No. 18 issue provides an intimate, "eyes-only" look at the morale and daily grit of the sailors who would eventually spearhead the Salerno and Southern France landings. To own this is to hold the literal paper and ink that circulated through the hands of the "Jeep Carrier" crews as they braced for the U-boat infested Atlantic. Its raw, unpolished production reflects the urgency of wartime mobilization, making it a high-octane centerpiece for any serious collection—a visceral connection to the vessel that turned the tide of the Mediterranean campaign.
