Baseball, before the Civil War... Baseball in San Francisco...

Item # 695730 ·

SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, March 27, 1858  It is subtitled in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage".
The middle of page 6 has: "The Ball Season of 1858" which reports on the coming baseball & cricket season in the New York vicinity. A few bits include: "...the approaching season promises to be a very successful one for the increasing popularity of these respective games. We are among those who are anxious that these out-door sports should be encouraged among our too little exercised citizens..." and more on the healthful benefits of the sport. More as well including subheads: "Amity Base Ball Club" and: "Base Ball Club with mention that: "A Club entitled the San Francisco Base Ball Club has been formed in San Francisco, California, & the following gentleman chosen officers..." with the list.
Could this be the earliest mention of baseball on the West Coast?
Twelve pages, 12 3/4 by 18 inches, a sporting-themed engraving in the masthead, great condition.
