THE CHARLESTON MERCURY, South Carolina, Dec. 23, 1864  The most notable report, particularly as a Confederate newspaper, is at the beginning of the back page with a rather subtle account headed: "Further From Savannah" noting: "We have not, as yet, received any detailed account of the evacuation of Savannah. On Sunday Sherman sent in a formal demand for the surrender of the city. This was refused; and 48 hours were demanded, to allow the non-combatants an opportunity to leave the place. During Sunday night, Monday night & Tuesday night, our forces quietly abandoned the city, bringing off all their wagons & field artillery, destroying many of the Central Railroad engines, and also all provisions & forage between Hardeesville and Savannah...".
This was a major blow to the Confederacy, and foretold the end of the war.
