Grant portrayed as a butcher...
RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, May 30, 1864 Not only is this a nice Confederate newspaper, but it is from the capital of the Confederacy so it includes over half a column of reports from "The Confederate Congress".
Much war reporting in this issue, as the front page has: "The War News" with various tidbits, & subheads including: "Fight Near Hanover Court House" "The Maryland Cavalry in An Ambuscade of Yankees", plus "Hospital & Prison Inspection" "The First Virginia Regiment--Bivouac Near Hanover Junction" the latter taking most of a column. Also: "From the Armies In Georgia" "Additional From the North" and "From Texas".
The back page includes a lengthy editorial, perhaps my favorite part of this title as the editor was rabidly anti-North. Bits include: "...the crafty Ulysses appears now to have laid aside the armour of Achilles & returned to his original character of an Artful Dodger...He [Grant] is the only Yankee general who was ever sufficiently generous to allow us, just for once, the privilege & pleasure of fighting him at our own breastworks...The armies of Grant & Butler consist of...some negroes...They fight more stubbornly than their predecessors but are less docile in slaughtering...we have not yet given over the hope of another assault by the Yankee army. Grant is a Butcher. His natural inclination is to make the blood fly..." & much more.
Also on page 2 are reports from the "Confederate Congress", and "How The People of the South Are to Be Treated--An Interesting Picture as Disclosed in a Letter from Yankee General Sherman" includes a full column article signed in type: W. T. Sherman. And still more war reporting with: "Latest from the Armies in Georgia--Advance of the Enemy--Splendid Condition of Johnston's Army--Atlanta to Be Defended to the Last--The Coming Battle" plus even more.
A single sheet issue with a one-column masthead as was typical in the South in the latter period of the war as most paper mills were in the North and every effort was made to conserve printing space. Folio size and in uncommonly nice, clean condition.
