Thoughts on the coming Yankee election...

Item # 694219 ·

DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, Jan. 25, 1864  Not just a nice Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy.
The front page is mostly taken up with the very lengthy: "Who Is Quartermaster-General? Report of the Committee On Military Affairs on the Message of The President, Transmitting a Communication from the Secretary of War, Relative to the Quartermaster General" which is signed by: Edward Sparrow. This is immediately followed by: "Message of the President Requesting the Advice of the Senate As to the Meaning of the First Clause of the Sixth Article of the Constitution" signed by him in type: Jefferson Davis.
The remainder of the front page is the: "Report of the Committee on the Judiciary".
The back page has the always-interesting editorial which focuses on the coming Presidential election, beginning: "Leap year brings round again in the United States the turmoil & excitement of a Presidential election...Lincoln's term draws rapidly to a close...The political cauldron is beginning to bubble...McClellan at one time seemed to have a change, but the Yankees...had discernment enough to see that he was not the genuine article...Grant, with the glory of Vicksburg encircling his brow, has certainly eclipsed all the military leaders...Lincoln is by no means disposed to give place to any other candidate...In his own cabinet, too, there are rival claims to his own..." & more.
There is also reporting from: "The Confederate Congress" and "Telegraphic--From Vicksburg and the Mississippi".
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, minor rubbing at folds, library stamp near the top of the front page, very nice condition.
