"Confederate States of America" in the masthead...
CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, April 4, 1864 Has "Confederate States Of America" printed in the dateline which is rarely seen on Southern newspapers from the Civil War.
Front page reports include: "Siege of Charleston - 217th Day" "Northern Sentiment" "The Growing Savageness of the War" "Yankee Recruiting in Europe" "Forrest's Victory in Kentucky--Alexandria Surrendered to Porter's Fleet" "Forrest's Attack on Paducah" "From Richmond" and more.
The back page has: "The Sad Fate of the Housatonic--Rebel Torpedoes & Iron Clads" "The Rebel Iron Clads" "Important from the North & West" and a bit more, plus many ads.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper which was typical from the latter months of the war as most of the paper mills were located in the North. Some scattered small holes due simply to weakness in the paper-making process and not due to wear. A few small archival mends to the margins of the back page are almost unnoticeable. Generally very nice condition.
