CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, May 5, 1863  Has "Confederate States Of America" in the masthead which is rarely found on Southern newspapers.
     Has bits of news, some from the war, and ads on the front page, including a report about "The New Flag". It says the bill for the flag was passed by the Congress and approved by the President. It describes the flag as consisting "...of a pure white field, with our battle flag as the union."
     The reverse has various war reports: "From Fredericksburg" and more war new in the next column: "Highly Important from the Rappahannock" "Another Great Battle At Fredericksburg--Stonewall Jackson In Possession Of The Fords--Capture Of 5000 Prisoners--More Coming In--Raid Of Yankee Cavalry--Excitement In Richmond", plus: "From the War" "Movements On The Mississippi."
     Later in the column is an important dispatch from Gen. Lee about the battle at Chancellorsville: "Official From General Lee" "Another Great Victory!" "Fighting Joe Hooker Retreating Across The Rappahannock!"  The dispatch says: "Yesterday Gen. Jackson penetrated the rear of the enemy, and drove him...from the Wilderness to within one mile of Chancellorsville. He was engaged at the same time at the front by...Longstreet's divisions...Many prisoners were taken, and the enemy's loss in killed and wounded is large. We have again to thank almighty God for a great victory. I regret to say that Gen. Paxton was killed; Gen. Jackson, severely..." & a bit more, signed in type: R. E. Lee, General Commanding.
     Great to have the dispatch from Lee reporting the news about   General Jackson's severe wound in a Confederate title.
     A folio-size, single sheet, two tiny holes in unrelated content, several areas of lite damp staining, otherwise in very good condition.
