Note: In September 1861, General Joseph E. Johnston commanded the Confederate Army of the Potomac, which was stationed along the southern bank of the Potomac River, primarily around Manassas and Centreville in northern Virginia. This positioning followed the Confederate victory at the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) in July 1861, after which Johnston was appointed to lead the Department of the Potomac and the Army of the Potomac on July 21, 1861.
