Texas becomes a state: a same day report...

Item # 689613 ·
DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., Dec. 29, 1845

* Texas statehood - joins the union
* Early, same day report from seat of government

History tells us that on December 29, 1845, Texas became the 28th state in the United States. Formerly part of Mexico, Texas had been an independent country since 1836.
Page 2, under the heading "Texas", is half a column reporting on the discussions on the admission of Texas to the Union. Ultimately it concludes with: "...Whereupon the bill extending the laws of the United States over the state of Texas was forthwith read a third time and passed [It needs but the Presidential signature to become a law.]...".
President James K. Polk would sign the document on the 29th, the date of this newspaper.
Wonderful to have this report not only in the newspaper from the nation's capital which was the "mouthpiece" of the federal government, but dated the day Texas officially become a state.
Four pages, very nice condition.
