The middle of page 3 has an article on the on-going Black Hawk Indian War, noting in part: "...General Atkinson was to march on that day with the Illinois militia...to attack the Indians who were stationed on Rock River...with a party of 40 or 50 Indians and killed five...General Dodge...fell in with a party of 11 Sac Indians strongly posted...succeeded in killing the whole number..." with more.
The Black Hawk War was a conflict between the United States and Native Americans led by Black Hawk, a Sauk leader. The war erupted after Black Hawk and a group of Indians crossed the Mississippi into Illinois. Black Hawk's motives were ambiguous, but he was apparently hoping to reclaim land sold to the United States in the disputed 1804 Treaty of St. Louis.
