Clearing the seas of pirates...
THE WEEKLY JOURNAL OR SATURDAY'S POST, London, Aug. 6, 1720 This title has one of the more beautiful & intricately engraved mastheads to be had, and is a nice display issue as such.
Among the news accounts on page 3 is: "The Lords of the Admiralty having appointed the Swallow & Enterprise for the coast of Guiney to clear those seas of the Pirates, who are a great annoyance to the African Company trading in those parts...".
Page 4 has: "They write from Boston in New England...that the Governor of Providence have sent thither...account...from the Havana, that they had certain intelligence...that the French at Movie were grown very strong...had seized one of the Spanish mines in North Mexico...that the Indians deserted the Spaniards...great numbers from Canada came down the River Mississippi & joined them..." with more on the situation.
Also a report begins: "Our merchants have advice that the Pirates continue to infest the coast of Africa who some time ago took no less than nine ships belonging to several nations in the River Gambia...appointed as convoy to the 10 African ships that are going out...is not doubted but that they will clear the coast of those robbers..." and a bit more.
Present are all 6 pages, as more typically the back leaf is lacking as it was often loose from pages 1-4 (there was no tax on 4 page newspapers at the time). Measures 8 1/2 by 13 1/2 inches, very nice condition.
