AMERICAN PHRENOLOGICAL JOURNAL, New York, February, 1853  Phrenology is a theory stating that the personality traits of a person can be derived from the shape of the skull. Although holding no validity today, it was a popular science in the mid-19th century and this periodical focused on it.
Inside has the portraits of two notables including "John Ericsson - Inventory of the Caloric Engine" along with their "Phrenological Character, Biographical Sketch, and Portrait". Ericsson would later build the ironclad, rotating ureter gun Monitor which would battle with the Confederate Merrimac in 1862.
Complete in 24 pages, 9 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
