Four pages, archivally rejoined at the spine which is irregular with some loss but no effect to the Mormon article. Folder size noted is for the issue folded in half.

Background: This report from the July 5, 1858 issue of Washington D.C.’s Daily National Intelligencer offers a stark snapshot of the human and military friction on the plains during the height of the Utah War (1857–1858). Transmitted via overland mail to eastern readers weeks after the event, the account details two starkly contrasting movements at Platte Bridge (near modern-day Casper, Wyoming)—a critical choke point along the emigrant trail. On one hand, the encounter with "fifty Mormons who had escaped from the valley" illustrates the internal dissent, severe economic hardship, and strict territorial control under Brigham Young's martial law, as families seized the opportunity created by approaching federal peace commissioners to flee eastward back to the States. On the other hand, the presence of a "party of 300 Mormons well armed and mounted" underscores the formidable military presence of the Nauvoo Legion militia, which continued to patrol the territory, scout federal troop movements under General Albert Sidney Johnston, and secure communication lines. Together, these reports captured the volatile transition period in mid-1858 as President Buchanan's military expedition pressed forward while disaffected refugees and armed Mormon patrols crossed paths along the trail.
