NEW YORK TIMES, April 22 1863  Perhaps the most notable content is on page 4, headed: "The Admission Of West Virginia As A  State" which is essentially taken up with the text of the official: "Proclamation" signed in type by: Abraham Lincoln, in which he declares that West Virginia would become a state: "... admitted into the Union on an equal footing with the original States in all respects...after sixty days from the date hereof...", dated April 20, 1863. That means June 20 was the official date of statehood.
West Virginia was the only state created by breaking away from a Confederate state.
Among the front page column heads on the Civil War: "Important From Eastern Virginia" "Retreat of the Enemy From Suffolk" "Official Reports from Admiral Lee and Gen. Dix" "Severe Fight Near Corinth" "The Rebels Defeated" "The Siege of Little Washington [N.C.] Raised by the Rebels" and more.
