THE MOUNTAIN MESSENGER, Downieville, California, Nov. 16, 1878 Downieville is a very small town at 3,000 ft. elevation in Northwestern California. It was founded in late 1849 during the Calif. Gold Rush, first known as "The Forks" for its location at the confluence of the Downie River and the North Fork of the Yuba River. It was soon renamed after Major William Downie, the town's founder, a Scotsman who led an expedition of nine miners (7 African-Americans) up the Yuba River.
