Printing of the Bill of Rights... Much on Ben Franklin...

Item # 670558

THE AMERICAN MUSEUM, Philadelphia, June, 1790  This title was one of just a small number of successful American magazines of the 18th century.
Among the articles are: "Extracts from the Last Will & Testament of his Excellency Benjamin Franklin" which takes nearly 4 pages and includes the "Codicil" with many particulars (see); "Remarks on the State of American Manufactures & Commerce" which takes nearly 6 pages; "Notes on the State of Pennsylvania" "On Maple Sugar" "Diligence, Industry, Frugality, etc. Recommended: Being the Introduction to one of the Last of the Almanacks published by Dr. Franklin in 1735" which was his famous "Way to Wealth" which takes over 4 pages & is signed in type: Richard Saunders; "An Important Discover by Dr. Franklin..." and more.
Included as well is the: "Appendix I" which is filled with poetry & takes 44 pages.
The highlight is certainly in "Appendix II" which contains a great wealth of "Public Papers". The most significant is the printing of the Bill of Rights, headed: "Congress of the United States" and includes the prefatory text which includes: "The convention of a number of the states having, at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire...that further declaratory & restrictive clauses should be added...Resolved...that the following articles be proposed to the legislatures...as amendments to the constitution of the United States...".
What follows are the twelve Articles to be approved, of which ten were ultimately added to the Constitution in 1791 when ratified by the states and become known as the Bill of Rights. A very historic document & terrific to find in an American periodical.
This Appendix II includes many other notable document, too many to note here, but two include: "Address of the Roman Catholics to George Washington..." to which he responded with a letter signed in type: George Washington; and the: "Report of the Secretary of State Respecting Coinage" which is signed in type: Thomas Jefferson, and a chart on the proceeds of the duties on imports, signed in type the Secretary of the Treasury: Alex. Hamilton.
The issue is complete in 68 pages, the Appendix I is complete in 44 pages, and the Appendix II is complete in 44 pages. All in very nice, clean condition, 5 by 8 inches, full title/contents page with the June issue.
