COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Dec. 18, 1793  Page 2 has a report about the controversial Citizen Genet, the French ambassador to the United States. It mentions: "...the executive...wrote to our minister in France to demand the recall of Citizen Genet. Giving those instructions two months to reach France, we may now every day expect to hear the results...".
Genet tried to get America to support its efforts in capturing British ships in the on-going conflict between those two countries, nearly causing a diplomatic crisis between the U.S. and France. Washington maintained a policy of neutrality in European problems. The convoluted situation is known as the Citizen Genet Affair.
