NILES NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, Sept. 7 1839  Inside under "The Suspicious Looking Schooner Captured" is an outstanding account about the capture of the famous slave ship known as the Amistad. The account of the capture, furnished by one of the officers, appeared in the New London Gazette.
The account is quite lengthy containing many details and particulars about the events that led to and included the capture of the Amistad. In addition to this report which continues on the next page, there is a second report: "Further Particulars Concerning The Schooner Amistad" that mentions in part: "...They were taken on board the brig, when Cingues, watching a convenient opportunity, leapt overboard, diving and swimming like a fish, till he was caught with a boat hook...". This report is quite informative as well, and includes the names of the slaves. Perhaps the best Amistad content we have found in a single issue.
