Page 3 has the noteworthy poem from Walt Whitman (signed in type, WALTER WHITMAN), "THE HOUSE OF FRIENDS," which is the first appearance of this poem written as his response to Northern Democrats who supported the (Fugitive Slave) Compromise of 1850. According to the Walt Whitman archive, he viewed their support as a betrayal of the nation's core values for both political and financial gain. It's great to have this 1st printing of one of Whitman's pre-"Leaves of Grass" poems.
