WAVERLY FREE PRESS, Waverly, New York, July 23, 1892  The second page of this issue contains the brief but significant report: "The president [Benjamin Harrison] has signed the joint resolution of Congress, making October 21, 1892, the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America, a general holiday. Whereas Columbus Day would not be established as an official federal holiday until 1937, this resolution was significant in regards to its purpose: "to encourage teachers, preachers, poets and politicians to use Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism - focusing on themes such as citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress" (source Wikipedia).  The front page also has a humorous account of a duel in Texas between Alexander Shoot and John Nott (see image). Additional news of the day with period advertisements throughout.
This is complete in four pages, browning at the edges, a few minor edge tears, and several small (typical) binding holes in the left spine, otherwise in good condition. It is brittle and needs to be handled with care.
