THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, England, October, 1791  Near the back is news headed: "America" which reports on some troubles with various Indian tribes, plus a note that: "...by tracing the lakes from Hudson's Straits to the ,Straits of Juan de Fuca [on the west coast of Canada] by a man and a boy, a passage has been discovered from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean without going round Cape Horn..." and a bit more (see). Also: "...On the Back Settlements the people are held in continual terror by the murders & depredations of the Indians."
Both plates called for are present, one of which shows Bambrough Castle and the tower within it (a repair in this print does not affect any print area). Related text as well.
Complete in 96 pages, full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate, 5 by 8 inches, nice condition.

This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
