This Vermont newspaper has both religious/Christian-themed news along with general news of the day.  Page 3 has coverage related to the gold rush era, "The California Emigration" and "Specie and California" (see images). Page two has several interesting articles, "Railroad to the Pacific" and "Riot in New York", the latter being detailed coverage of the famous Astor Place Riot, which was historically significant in that it was the deadliest riot in U.S. history to-date, and was the first time a state militia fired upon and killed civilians.  This riot is also credited as leading to the eventual arming of police with firearms. A brief but related article appears on page 3 as well.  Page 1 has, "The Slavery Question in Kentucky", which is concluded on page 2.
