THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 26, 1862  Under the small heading of: "An Infamous Falsehood or an Infamous Order", page 4 contains the printing of the "infamous" General Order #28 by General Butler. This very controversial order was in response to harassment of his soldiers by the women of New Orleans, in which he threatens to prosecute them "...as a woman of the town plying her avocation.", to which General Beauregard was quick to react. 
The editorial comments include: "...if Gen. Butler has issued any such order he should be forthwith dismissed from the army...the whole thing is clearly a fabrication. The fact of its being used by Beauregard to stimulate the decaying ardor of his troops brands its character..." with much more.  
A great item on this interesting sidebar to the Civil War. 
The front page has a wealth of Civil War coverage and also features a nice map headed: "Our Army On The Chickahominy".
Of special interest is a page 3 report: "From Kentucky" which mentions the famous abolitionist Frederick Douglass. It is a brief item, noting: "...By keeping his foot down on all Wendell Phillips, Lloyd Garrison, Fred. Douglass radicalism, he will rightly lay at the door of the rebels all the damage done to slavery during their war..." with more. Any mention of Frederick Douglass in a period paper is quite uncommon.
