Item # 571802 ·
LEOMINSTER DAILY ENTERPRISE, Leominster, Massachusetts, December 17, 1937

* Alcatraz Island Prison, San Francisco Bay
* 1st successful escape ? (1st report)

This 12 page newspaper has a one column headline on the front page: "Patrols Hunt For Convicts". This tells of the escape of Theodore Cole & Ralph Roe from Alcatraz Prison. This was the first escape (2nd overall) attempt in which no bodies were recovered.

Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Light browning, otherwise in good condition.

Source, alcatrazhistory.com: While working in the mat shop in the model industries building, Theodore Cole and Ralph Roe had, over a period of time, filed their way through the flat iron bars on a window. After climbing through the window, they made their way down to the water's edge and disappeared into San Francisco Bay. This attempt occurred during a bad storm and the Bay's currents were especially fast and strong - most people believe Roe and Cole were swept out to sea. Officially, they are listed missing and presumed dead.
