THE NEW YORK HERALD, New York, August 1, 1864. This 8 page newspaper is in good condition due to the use of cotton and rag paper during this very historic time in U.S. history. This issue is loaded with advertisements and Civil War reports throughout from the day it was first reported which includes the following FRONT PAGE Map: "PETERSBURG, The Work Done by Grant--What He Has Overcome--The Lines of Rebel Defenses that Have Been Reduced Since He Crossed the James--The Fort Recently Blown Up, &c". Also includes the following headlines: "GRANT" "Glorious News from Petersburg" "The Siege Opened in Earnest" "Explosion of a Mine Under the Rebel Works" "A Battery of Sixteen Guns Blown Up" "Description Of the Mine" "Three Tiers of Earthworks Carried" and much more.
