October 01, 1864

THE DAILY SOUTHERN GUARDIAN, Columbia, South Carolina, Oct. 1, 1864

* Rare Confederate publication
* Printed on "necessity paper"

A rather rare title and great that it has the word “Southern”.
The front page is mostly taken up with ads & military notices, including one headed: "Slave Labor". But also: "War News" "Siege Matters--450th Day" which takes most of a column.
The back page has a wealth of war reporting including: "General Order #73" "From Virginia" "Horrid Murder" "From the North--Seizure of Vessels on Lake Erie--Plan to Release the Confederate Prisoners on Johnson's Island..." "From the Trans-Mississippi" and more.
This issue is printed on "necessity paper", being more like wrapping paper than typical newsprint. It was not uncommon in the South that printers became desperate for paper as most mills were in the North.
Complete as a single sheet issue with wide, untrimmed margins. Various archival mends to the back page, some dirtiness to an upper quadrant of the ftpg., a blue library stamp above the masthead, generally good condition.
