Page 10 contains a seemingly innocuous report but which has great significance in the sport of horse racing: the very first running of the Belmont Stakes.
The column heads include: "THE TURF" "The Summer Meeting of the American Jockey Club" "The Jerome Park Races" "Four Fine Races" "Luxemburg, Ruthless, Cleopatra and Virgli the Winners" and more.
Within the text, which takes nearly 3 columns, is a subhead: "The Second Race" which begins: "The Belmont stakes, for 3 year olds, one mile and five furlongs...." with a list of the horses, then a review of the race with Ruthless the winner. The text ends with: "...it will rank as one of the best races that ever took place in America."
This was the very first running of the Belmont Stakes, which is now the final race of the Triple Crown of horse racing.
Four pages, very nice condition.
