October 26, 1931

CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE, October 26, 1931  This is the perfect newspaper for the banner headline it features: "CHARLES A. COMISKEY DEAD".
Comiskey was an American Major League Baseball player, manager and team owner. He was a key person in the formation of the American League, and was also founding owner of the Chicago White Sox. Comiskey Park, the White Sox' storied baseball stadium, was built under his guidance and named for him.
Comiskey's reputation was permanently tarnished by his team's involvement in the Black Sox Scandal of 1919, although he was inducted as an executive into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
The column head notes: "Famous Owner Of White Sox Expires at 72" "End Comes at Eagle River, Wis."
Not only great to have this report in a Chicago newspaper, but this is a same day report--he died on October 26.
And being a Chicago newspaper, a gangster-related report would seem to be expected, and the front page has one: "Capone Prison Trip Hinges On Appeal Today" "Al Shares Jail Cell with D'Andrea". Al Capone had recently been convicted of tax evasion.
The complete 34 page issue. This is the "rag edition" printed on very high quality newsprint meant for institutional use. In great condition as such, 4 small binding holes at the blank spine.
