Are cigarettes bad for you? Thomas Edison says yes - Philip Morris says no...

Item # 654417

July 9, 1914

BOSTON EVENING TRANSCRIPT, July 9, 1914  Responding to a statement made by Thomas Edison which appeared in newspapers dated May 11th in which he said he is convinced cigarette smoking is bad for one's health, Philip Morris took out a half-page ad in this issue (full top-to-bottom) in which they do their best to debunk his statement. The heading reads: "IT WAS MR. EDISON'S MISTAKE." See images for details. This ad would be great for display.
Unrelated is the front page article, "WANTS SIR THOMAS LIPTON CRIMINALLY CHARGED," which speaks of his his potential connection to a military supplies scandal of the era.
Other news of the day with period advertising is found throughout.
Complete in 16 pages, small binding holes at the blank spine, partially loose at the spine, very nice condition for the era. A bit fragile & should be handled carefully.

Item from Catalog 274 (released for September, 2018)...
