NEW YORK HERALD, April 11, 1865 From two days after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox, and 3 days before Lincoln's assassination at Ford's Theatre. The first column heads include: "OUR VICTORIES" "How They were Received in the City Yesterday" "400 Guns Fired in the Park" "Another Salute at Union Square To-Day" "Rejoicings Throughout The Country" "Speeches of the President, General Halleck, General Butler & Gov. Dennison" with more. Also on the ftpg: "Rejoicing Over The Surrender" and "Our Captures - Rebel Generals Prisoners" and more.
Included on the front page is the text of Lincoln's speech to the crowed in front of the White House (see), which would be one of his last public speeches. In fact a bit later in this report he references making a speech the next day, which would be his last.
Much more war-related content inside. Eight pages, a bit of ftpg. foxing and an ink spear at a margin, generally nice condition.
