A very famous anti-slavery newspaper published by the noted emancipator William Lloyd Garrison. The ornate engraving in the masthead features three scenes: a slave auction, an image of Jesus breaking the bonds of the oppressors, and a slave family about to depart for their journey to emancipation.
The ftpg. includes: "Unique Letter to The President" taking nearly 2 columns; "General Lee's Letter on Arming the Negroes" which includes: "...with reference to the employment of negroes as soldiers. I think the measure not only expedient, but necessary. The enemy will certainly use them against us if he gets possession of them...", signed in type: R. E. Lee
Items inside include; "The Freed People of Louisiana" "Admiral Dahlgren's Proclamation Declaring Slavery Abolished--a Model Document" and so much more. Pg. 3 includes an advertisement headed: "Colored Men Wanted" for the U.S. Navy (see). 
Four pages, slightly irregular at the blank spine, nice condition.
