January 03, 1863

NEW YORK HERALD, Jan. 3, 1863

* President Abraham Lincoln
* Emancipation Proclamation
* Freedom for slaves

The front page is dominated by a very large Civil War map headed: "THE GREAT BATTLE IN TENNESSEE--Scene of Gen. Rosecrans' Battle Around Murfreesboro..." with related front page heads.
But the prime content is on page 4 where almost an entire column is taken up with: "IMPORTANT" "THE PROCLAMATION OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES" "EMANCIPATION" "All Slaves in all States and Sections in Rebellion Declared Free" with the full text of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed in type by the president: Abraham Lincoln. Great to have the word "Emancipation" and phrase: "...Slaves...Declared Free..."in the heading, which rarely appeared in other newspapers.
Complete in 8 pages, never bound nor trimmed so with original, wide margins. But various wear at the margins with some minor margin tears, foxing at the folds and minor fold rubbing plus a crease near the middle. Fortunately the noted content is fine \but with some foxing.
