CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, July 23, 1862
* Battle of Gaines's Mill, Virginia
* General Robert E. Lee victory
* In a Confederate title
This is one of just a few newspapers from the Confederacy which printed in the dateline: "Confederate States Of America". Among the front page items are: "From Richmond--Army Appointments--Exchange of Prisoners" "From Mobile--Col. Morgan's Movements In Kentucky--Great Excitement" "From Chattanooga--Buell's Army--Arrival of Distinguished Prisoners" "Later From Vicksburg--The Yankee Fleet Badly Damaged" and other smaller items.
Page 2 has an excellent & lengthy account of the Battle of Gaines' Mill, taking nearly two columns (see for portions). Page 3 has a few military orders but is primarily taken up with ads. The back page includes: "Affairs in the "Valley" "Outrages of a Federal Commander in Alabama" "The Strength of the Southern Army" " Encouragement of Gambling" "A Skirmish in Orange County" and other items.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, a bit of very light foxing or staining, generally very nice condition.
