October 29, 1919

THE NEW YORK TIMES, October 29, 1919

* Volstead Act veto overridden
* Total Prohibition in United States

The front page has a banner headline: "SENATE REPASSES PROHIBITION BILL, LAW NOW IN EFFECT" with subheads that include: "SENATE OVERRIDES PROHIBITION VETO BY VOTE OF 65 TO 20" and more. (see) First report coverage on the House overriding the president's veto of the Volstead Act. This is a very significant issue reporting an event which would lead America into a very tumultuous, crime-ridden era. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 32 pages, light even toning, irregular along the spine, generally nice.
