September 04, 1936

THE NEW YORK TIMES, September 4, 1936

* Nikita Balieff death (1st report)
* Jewish Russian Armenian

The top of page 19 has a photo with one column heading: "NIKITA BALIEFF, 59, STAGE FIGURE, DIES" with subheads. (see) I suspect this is one of the few publications to report this particular event as other titles in our inventory do not.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete with all 40 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.

wikipedia notes: Nikita F. Balieff was a Jewish Russian Armenian born vaudevillian, stage performer, writer, impresario, and director. He is best known as the creator and master of ceremonies of La Chauve-Souris theater group.
