June 05, 1838

VERMONT GAZETTE, Bennington, June 5, 1838

* Trail of Tears
* Native Americans
* Winfield Scott

Page 3 has most of a column headed: "Address of General Scott to The Cherokees" signed in type: Winfield Scott, from the Cherokee Agency. This was the last of the various forced migration of the American Indians to land west of the Mississippi, part of the infamous "Trail of Tears" (see the web). It includes: "Cherokees! The President of the United States has sent me, with a powerful army, to cause you, in obedience to the Treaty of 1835, to join that part of your people who are already established in prosperity on the other side of the Mississippi. Unhappily, the two years which were allowed for the purpose you have suffered to pass away without following...the emigration must be commenced in haste but I hope without disorder..." and more (see).
Four pages, rejoined at the spine, posting hole at the top not close to mentioned content, good condition.
