The front page contains a report on the Pratt Street Riot, or the Pratt Street Massacre as it was called (see the web for details). It was considered the first bloodshed of the Civil War, as troops from Massachusetts encountered Confederate sympathizers as the troops passed through Baltimore on their was to Washington, D.C.
The top of the first column has heads: "Highly Exciting News" "A Day of Riot & Blood in Baltimore" "Pennsylvania and Massachusetts Volunteers Attacked" "Two Mass. men  Killed & Several Wounded" "They Return the Fire & Kill Seven of the Rioters" "The Secessionists Nonplussed at Harper's Ferry" with more, including a related "Proclamation" signed in type by the President: Abraham Lincoln (see).
