May 03, 1939

THE TOPEKA DAILY CAPITAL, Kansas, May 3, 1939  A one column head on the sports page rather quietly announces a major moment in baseball history--Lou Gehrig breaking his consecutive game appearance streak, with: "Yankees Run Wild To Bury Bengals..." "Gehrigless Yankees Win 22-2; White Sox Turn Back A's 4-1". The report begins: "While Lou Gehrig, benched at his own request after 2,130 consecutive games, watched from the sidelines, his New York Yankee teammates clubbed five Detroit pitchers...". On the 4th of July of that year would be his emotional retirement from baseball.
Fourteen pages, nice condition.
