November 27, 1928

THE NEW YORK TIMES, November 27, 1928

* 1st Macy's Parade w/ balloons released

Page 20 carries the article headed: "Store to Present Holiday Pageant" with subheads "Santa Claus to Be Welcomed to City Thursday in Macy's Spectacle" "Balloon Race Is Planned" and more. This was the first Macy's Parade in which helium balloons were to be released following the parade anticipating them to land in approximately a week. Attached to the balloons was a reward of $100 for the return of each of them.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 64 pages with small binding slits along the left spine, otherwise in nice condition.

wikipedia notes: At the finale of the 1928 parade, the balloons were released into the sky, where they unexpectedly burst. The following year, they were redesigned with safety valves to allow them to float for a few days. Address labels were sewn into them, so that whoever found and mailed back the discarded balloon received a gift from Macy's.
