August 24, 1864

THE CAMDEN DAILY JOURNAL, South Carolina, Aug. 24, 1864

* Very rare Civil War title

A nice and quite rare title from late in the Confederacy. The front page has an editorial item headed: “Rich—Very” which notes in part: “Yankee official bulletins since the war commenced have announced the killing of 500,000 Confederate soldiers in skirmishes & 2,500,000 in pitched battles…a grand total of 3 ½ millions of our men who have been killed during the war, which is considerably more than the entire fighting population of the South at the beginning of the struggle! The conclusion…is irresistible, that Yankee official reports are…lies, & monstrous lies at that…According to Yankee reports…we would say there was not a white male between 16 to 60 left in the Confederacy…” & more (see photos).

Also on the front page are: “Interesting to Yankee Purchasers of Real Estate” “Foreigners” (see photos); “From Virginia” “A Burial At Sea” “and other items.
The back page is primarily taken up with notices and ads, etc., including “General Orders No. 9” “Slave Labor for the Coast” “General Orders No. 10” which is concerning: “…the impressments of slaves to labor on the coast defence…” (see photos), & other items.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 12 ½ by 17 ¼ inches, never bound nor trimmed, wide margins, some light water staining, generally very nice condition.
