April 13, 1836

NEWARK DAILY ADVERTISER, New Jersey, April 13, 1836  Page 2 has several nice reports concerning the Battle of the Alamo, one headed: "Scene of the Late Texas Tragedy" which begins with a description of the "Alemo" [sic], followed by: "This little garrison of San Antonio, although comprising but 182 men, held out for 11 days against an army of 2,000 or 3,000 men headed by Santa Anna himself. All that the most determined bravery could achieve was accomplished by the besieged..." with more (see). following this is the famous letter signed in type by William Travis dated a month before the fall of the Alamo in which he implores for assistance from "citizens and compatriots", noting: "I am besieged by a thousand Mexicans...they demanded an unconditional surrender...I answered their demand with a cannon shot...I shall defend myself to the last extremity and die as becomes a soldier. I never intend to retreat or surrender. Victory or death."
Following this is an article beginning: "Davy Crockett is dead! He has often said 'he wished he might be shot', and he has been. Unquestionably, he was a brave & daring man..." with more (see).
