July 11, 1775

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, July 11, 1775  Page 2 has some reports concerning General Gage and his movements, with mention that: "...he will...try the fate of a battle, whether the Americans are to be slaves or a free people...". Another report includes mention that "...the people of Maryland being determined to risk their lives & fortunes in defence of the liberties of America, and we hear the Virginians have 20,000 men under discipline for the same purpose." with more (see).
Half the back page is taken up with war reports, including one item stating: "...the Hon. John Hancock's house, we hear, was entered by a number of soldiers who began to pillage & break down the fences...our army have begun an entrenchment at Cambridge. General Gage is making Boston as secure from an attack as he possibly can...when the 2nd brigade marched out of Boston to reinforce the first, nothing was played by the fifes and drums but Yankee Doodle, which had become their favourite tune ever since that notable exploit which did such honour to the troops of Britain's King of tarring & feathering a poor countryman in Boston & parading with him through the principal streets under arms with their bayonets fixed. Upon their return to Boston one asked his brother officer how he liked the tune now: 'D---n them, returned he, they made us dance it till we were tired', since which Yankee Doodle found less sweet in their ears."
A wealth of fine reading in this issue. Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches, minor rubbing, good condition.
