THE DETROIT NEWS, May 27, 1934

* Pioneer Zephyr "The Silver Streak"
* Diesel-powered railroad train
* Travel speed record

Near the bottom of the front page is a two column heading: "Flying Train Sets Record on 1,015-Mile Nonstop Trip" (see) First report coverage on this record setting journey. See below for details.
Other news of the day. Complete 1st section only with all 20 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.

wikipedia notes: On May 26, 1934, the Pioneer Zephyr set a speed record for travel between Denver, Colorado, and Chicago, Illinois, when it made a 1,015-mile non-stop "Dawn-to-Dusk" dash in 13 hours 5 minutes at an average speed of 77 mph. For one section of the run it reached a speed of 112.5 mph, just short of the then US land speed record of 115 mph. The historic dash inspired a 1934 film and the train's nickname, "The Silver Streak"
